    $23.50$25.10

The OLD TELEGRAPH TRACK  (known as OTT) follows the original telegraph line through the Cape York Peninsula, and for much of the Cape’s history was the only available route. It has become one of Australia's ICONIC 4WD trips. The Overland Telegraph Line was once the only method of communication for those living on the Cape York Peninsula. The Telegraph operated from 1885 until 1962 with just two wires sending morse code via repeater stations, old homesteads, along the way. The line was upgraded to radio in WW2 and was still used for telephone cable until 1987 when it was finally dismantled. Many of the original poles are still in place and the Old Telegraph Track (OTT) north follows the original route. The OTT is a rough road and accessible only during the dry season. It passes through some beautiful country with several creek and river crossings, and there are several patches of deep sand. Bush camps are set up at most creek crossings. There are two bypass roads that allow travellers to get from the Peninsula Development Road to The Tip without having to navigate all of the creek crossings and rough roads. Most visitors take the OTT track north and return via the Bypass roads, but the OTT is an integral part of this memorable journey providing adventure, tradition and stunning scenery See what the TOURISM website has to say by clicking HERE This plate comes standard as a flat and non-embossed plate and for a little more cost we are able to give it a pressed out embossed border, so you have a choice. Please select your preference from the drop down menu. These novelty number  plates are made from high quality aluminium and the artwork applied by a dye sublimation process with a lovely gloss finish. They measure 37 x 13 cm, exactly the same as the traditional fully embossed type of plate and look just like our other Aussie made novelty number plates; even the mounting holes are in exactly the same positions, so they can easily be hung on display indoors or outdoors. One great advantage the flat non-embossed version is that owing to the absence of embossed border, and being just under 1 mm thick, it’s quite flexible and will flex about 10 cm from the centre, so can be mounted on curved surfaces. Each embossed rim style plate is sealed in a clear plastic sleeve, and each flat non-embossed plate is shrink-sealed in plastic film, so both types are ready for retail display, plus we offer the option of fixing them to a cardboard display card, so they can then be hung and displayed on the same display racks that are used for the other Aussie size plates we sell. In 99.99% of cases, what you see on Dixie’s website or brochure is what you get. However, there are the odd times when designs have changed in some small way (eg: maybe a logo moves to a different location on the item, or the colour changes). PLENTY HIGHWAY - The Plenty Highway is 811km between Boulia in QLD and Alice Springs in the NT. The purists regard the best section to drive as the 498 kms outback track (mostly unsealed) between the Stuart Highway and north-western Queensland. The road begins at a turnoff from the Stuart Highway 68 kilometres north of Alice Springs, and finishes at Tobermorey Homestead on the Northern Territory/Queensland border. It then continues for another 249 km to Boulia Queensland, as the Donohue Highway. The first 100 kilometres from the Stuart Highway to Ongeva Creek is sealed. The remaining 178 km to Jervois Homestead is unsealed as is the rest of the track to Boulia. Information about its condition may be obtained from the Harts Range police station, 112 km from the Stuart Highway.  East of Jervois Homestead, the road is formed earth, deteriorating to rocks and bulldust as it nears Tobermorey, 213 km from Jervois Homestead. The road north to Urandangi and thence to Mount Isa bears left just before Tobermorey. As at other Northern Territory or Queensland border crossings, the road may deteriorate east of the border into Queensland with deep potholes and bulldust. It is 249 km from Tobermorey to Boulia and good camping may be found at the Georgina River, at about the 125 km mark.  Fuel and food may be obtained at Gemtree, Atitjere community, Jervois Homestead and Boulia. As of June 2018, fuel and camping is available at Tobermorey. The Donohue Highway is not suitable for ordinary caravans and road trains up to 53 metres in length use both highways. MEREENIE LOOP - nowadays called ‘The Red Centre Way’ gives a grand tour of the very best of central Australia. The unsealed Mereenie Loop Road lets you drive directly from Kings Canyon (Watarrka National Park) to the West MacDonnell Ranges - or the other way round - without backtracking. It is a lovely drive through some beautiful desert country, certainly more appealing than the much longer detour along the sealed highway. If you want to visit not only Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon, but also want to see the West MacDonnells, or maybe Finke Gorge National Park (Palm Valley) and Hermannsburg, then you will probably use it. It's an unsealed road and four wheel drive is recommended, but you usually don't need it. The only exception may be after rain, if the road has been damaged, or if it is still wet. If it rained recently the road may be closed. • SIMPSON DESERT

    $23.50$25.10

The SIMPSON DESERT  is a large area of dry, red sandy plain and dunes in Northern Territory, South Australia and Queensland in central Australia. It is the fourth-largest Australian desert, with an area of 176,500 km2 and is the world's largest sand dune desert. The desert is underlain by the Great Artesian Basin, one of the largest inland drainage areas in the world. Water from the basin rises to the surface at numerous natural springs, including Dalhousie Springs, and at bores drilled along stock routes, or during petroleum exploration. As a result of exploitation by such bores, the flow of water to springs has been steadily decreasing in recent years. It is also part of the Lake Eyre basin. The Simpson Desert is an erg that contains the world's longest parallel sand dunes. These north-south oriented dunes are static, held in position by vegetation. They vary in height from 3 metres  in the west to around 30 metres on the eastern side. The largest dune, Nappanerica or Big Red, is 40 metres  in height. The desert is popular with tourists, particularly in winter, and popular landmarks include the ruins and mound springs at Dalhousie Springs, Purnie Bore wetlands, Approdinna Attora Knoll and Poeppel Corner (where Queensland, South Australia and Northern Territory meet). Because of the excessive heat and inadequately experienced drivers attempting to access the desert in the past, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources has decided since 2008-2009 to close the Simpson Desert during the summer — to save unprepared "adventurers" from themselves!! • ANNE BEADELL HIGHWAY

    $23.50$25.10

The ANNE BEADELL HIGHWAY  is an outback unsealed track linking Coober Pedy, South Australia, and Laverton, Western Australia, a total distance of 1,325 km.  The track was surveyed and built by Len Beadell, Australian surveyor, who named it after his wife. The track passes through remote arid deserts and scrub territory of South Australia and Western Australia, which often have summer temperatures as high as 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit). Sand dunes predominate for most of the track. The road was constructed to provide access for a series of surveys adding to the overall geodetic survey of unexplored parts of Australia. The information was required for rocket range projects at Woomera. Construction was completed in five stages, spanning nine years from 1953 to 1962. The first stage from Mabel Creek station near Coober Pedy, west towards Emu Field, was built in February and March 1953 to provide access for British atomic tests at Emu Field. This stage preceded the formation of Beadell's Gunbarrel Road Construction Party, and was the first road built by Beadell. The second stage was begun in July 1957 in the reverse direction, from Anne's Corner towards Emu Field, after Beadell had completed the Mount Davies Road in the north-west of South Australia. The third stage was commenced in August 1961, running westward from Anne's Corner to Vokes Hill. In April 1962 the fourth stage proceeded west from Vokes Hill, beyond Serpentine Lakes towards the future Neale Junction where the construction party arrived on 16 August. From Neale Junction during August and September 1962 the north-south Connie Sue Highway was constructed between Warburton and Rawlinna. The fifth stage of the Anne Beadell Highway was then commenced, and was completed at Yamarna near Lake Yeo when it joined an existing track to Laverton on 17 November 1962. Beadell put considerable effort into rediscovering Vokes Hill while surveying the track, as a new device called a Tellurometer was being introduced. It used radio waves for distance measurement, thus requiring high points for operation This plate comes standard as a  flat and non-embossed plate and for a little more cost we are able to give it a pressed out embossed border, so you have a choice. SILVERTON is a small village at the far west of New South Wales, Australia, 26 kms north-west of Broken Hill. At the 2006 census, Silverton had a population of 50. It is a classic outback town that goes back to the silver prospecting boom of the 1880s. Set against the spectacular Mundi Mundi Plains, Silverton has also been the site of some famous Australian films, including Mad Max. The former Silverton Gaol, now the town’s museum, brings Silverton’s history alive with a fascinating collection of photographs, household items, mining and medical equipment. You can even see a ‘coroner’s bath’, where bodies were preserved before the arrival of the Sydney coroner. INNAMINCKA is an isolated outback settlement which is nothing more than a pub (a good one with quality accommodation and above average outback meals), a general store, fuel pumps and an airstrip on the Strzelecki Track. It is located beside the mighty Cooper Creek and, being 464 km north of sealed road, is a natural stopping point for refuelling both car and tired humans. Its importance lies in its proximity to the famous Burke and Wills Dig Tree and the romance of being in the middle of nowhere. Location: Innamincka is located 1,164 km north of Adelaide via Broken Hill and 1,058 km via the Strzelecki Track. It is 464 km north-east of Lyndhurst on a dirt track. No one is sure what Innamincka means but it is likely to be a corruption of 'Yidniminckanie' a word used by the local Yawarawarka Aborigines to describe how the rainbow serpent had disappeared into waterhole. The Strzelecki Track is mostly unsealed but with a few short sealed sections to facilitate overtaking. It links Innamincka to Lyndhurst, passing through the Strzelecki Desert. The 475-km track was pioneered by bushman Harry Redford in 1871 and is passable to conventional vehicles during the dry season, although caution is required. A shorter route is available via a public access road between Moomba and Innamincka, making the distance 458 kilometres This plate comes standard as a  flat and non-embossed plate and for a little more cost we are able to give it a pressed out embossed border, so you have a choice. The BIRDSVILLE TRACK is a notable outback road in Australia. The 517 km track runs between Birdsville in south-western Queensland and Marree, a small town in the north-eastern part of South Australia. It traverses three deserts along the route, the Strzelecki Desert, Sturt Stony Desert and Tirari Desert. Originally the track was of poor quality and suitable for high-clearance four-wheel drive vehicles only, but it is now a graded dirt road and a popular tourist route. It is also used by cattle trucks carrying livestock. The track passes through one of the driest parts of Australia with an average rainfall of less than 100 mm annually. The area is extremely barren, dry and isolated, and travellers should carry water and supplies in case of emergencies. • OODNADATTA TRACK

    $23.50$25.10

The OODNADATTA TRACK is an unsealed 617 km outback road between Marree and Marla via Oodnadatta in South Australia. Along the way, the track passes the southern lake of the Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, and the outback settlements of William Creek and Oodnadatta. The track follows a traditional Aboriginal trading route. Along the Track are numerous springs feeding water from the Great Artesian Basin, the most accessible examples being the mound springs found in Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs Conservation Park near Coward Springs. Later, because of the availability of water, the route was chosen for the steam-train powered Central Australia Railway, the original route of The Ghan, also the route taken by the explorer John McDouall Stuart on his third expedition in 1859. Remnants of the many railway sidings and bridges, the ruins of railway buildings, and Overland Telegraph repeater stations are located along the track – some of the best preserved are the Coward Springs Campground – complete with natural artesian spa and Curdimurka. Today, the Oodnadatta Track roughly follows the former railway line as far north as Oodnadatta, and then turns to the west, meeting the sealed Stuart Highway at Marla. The road's surface has been well maintained in recent years. In dry weather, the track is passable to most 2 WD vehicles and caravans, but a four-wheel drive vehicle will provide a more comfortable journey, and will be essential for driving the track during and after rain. Since the track is unsealed, the Government of South Australia recommends that users of the track check if the track is open before departure. The Track was named by Adam Plate of the Oodnadatta Progress Association Inc. in about 1980 to form a trilogy of unsealed tourist routes with the Birdsville and Strzelecki Tracks nearby. This plate comes standard as a  flat and non-embossed plate and for a little more cost we are able to give it a pressed out embossed border, so you have a choice. To see what the display card looks like please click here. For protection during delivery we use extra packing materials to ensure they arrive in tip-top condition The design and photography of this plate is the property of Dixie Souvenirs If you would like plates or signs made to your own design, we can easily do this for you. Virtually anything you want can be created with our modern digital equipment.  The key is good art, and we can do ANY GRAPHIC!    ANY DESIGN!    ANY COLOUR! For more details on how to create a sign or plate to YOUR design PLEASE CLICK HERE Important note about images we provide : Just as we sometimes see that “pricing is subject to change without notice”, so too are “designs subject to change without notice”. In 99.99% of cases, what you see on Dixie’s website or brochure is what you get. However, there are the odd times when designs have changed in some small way (eg: maybe a logo moves to a different location on the item, or the colour changes). Sometimes this information doesn’t always trickle down until the new designs are manufactured and shipped to Dixie. We hope this is helpful and understandable.

The STRZELECKI TRACK is an outback track in South Australia, mostly unsealed but with a few short sealed sections to facilitate overtaking, linking Innamincka to Lyndhurst. It passes through the Strzelecki Desert. The GUNBARREL HIGHWAY is an isolated desert track in the Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia. It consists of about 1,350 km of washaways, heavy corrugations, stone, sand and flood plains. The Gunbarrel Highway connects Victory Downs in the Northern Territory to Carnegie Station in Western Australia. Some sources incorrectly show the highway extending west to Wiluna. The road was built as part of Australia's role in the weapons research establishment called Woomera which included Emu Field and Maralinga, both atomic bomb testing sites. The name comes from Len Beadell's Gunbarrel Road Construction Party so named as his intention was to build roads as straight as a gunbarrel.
