In the USA, about 30 states require both front and rear license plates. The remainder only require a rear license plate. This is where ‘vanity’ or ‘novelty’ number plates came into being. They could be be legally displayed in the rear window or on the front of vehicles registered in those states. In Alabama, the “Heart of Dixie”, you only require you to display one license plate on the rear. Thus a massive range of vanity/novelty plates evolved, and from there followed the explosive hobby of collecting license plates. It’s become one of the most popular hobbies in the United States.
