Our VW HISTORIC PLATES had sat un-noticed on a shelf in a dark corner of our store room until recently, and we have only about half a dozen of each of these three designs on offer: They are lightly embossed and made from aluminium, and the oval plate measures 30 x 18 cms and the two rectangular plates measure 30 x 15 cm; exactly the same as other US made novelty number plates; even the mounting holes are in exactly the same positions, so they can easily be hung on display indoors or outdoors. Thy are shrink wrapped and for protection during delivery we use extra packing materials to ensure they arrive in tip-top condition The plates carry no licencing information but the OVAL has the code 99001; the BUS plate has the code 89-K3261 and the TYPE III has the code 89-K3259 Volkswagen - a German automaker founded on May 28, 1937 by the German Labour Front and headquartered in Wolfsburg. It is the flagship marque of the Volkswagen Group and is the largest automaker worldwide. $25.00The VW FAN novelty plate refers to The Volkswagen Beetle, or informally the Volkswagen Bug, is an economy car manufactured and marketed by German automaker Volkswagen (VW) from 1938 until 2003. There are three plates to choose from - VW FAN ; BEETLE FAN ; BUG FAN - please select the wording your require from the drop down menu The need for the VW Beetle were formulated by Adolf Hitler, leader of Nazi Germany, wishing for a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for the new road network of his country. He contracted Porsche in 1934 to design and build it to his exacting standards. Ferdinand Porsche and his team took until 1938 to finalise the design. This is one of the first rear-engined cars. With over 21 million manufactured (21,529,464) in an air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive configuration, the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design platform, worldwide. Although designed in the 1930s, the Beetle was only produced in significant numbers from 1945 on (mass production had been put on hold during the Second World War) when the model was internally designated the Volkswagen Type 1, and marketed simply as the "Volkswagen". $25.00The HERBIE novelty number plate derives its name from the 1963 Volkswagen Beetle, a character that is featured in several Disney films in the “Love Bug” series. A character in the film was a race-driver Jim Douglas (played by Dean Jones), who named the car "Herbie" after his uncle Herb, a professional boxer whose broken nose greatly resembled the hood of a Volkswagen Beetle. Dixie’s Aussie size plates are made in Australia and measure 37cm x 13cm – the same as a standard size ‘real’ number plate. The Aussie manufacturer is the very same company that makes the ‘real’ plates, and they have been producing and selling quality Novelty Number Plates for many years. It was a forward control panel van introduced in 1950 by the German automaker Volkswagen as its second car model. Following – and initially deriving from Volkswagen's first model, the Type 1 (Beetle) – it was given the factory designation Type 2. Like the Beetle, the van has received numerous nicknames worldwide, including the "microbus", "minibus", and because of its popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960s, Hippie van/wagon, and still remains iconic for many hippies today.
