Our BMC AUSTIN AND MORRIS plate features two iconic cars manufactured by the British Motor Corporation (Australia) which formed in Australia in 1954 by the merger of the Austin Motor Company (Australia) and Nuffield (Australia) Pty Ltd. Following further corporate changes in the UK in the late 1960s, BMC Australia was absorbed into the newly established British Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia, the name of which became Leyland Motor Corporation of Australia in 1972, and then JRA Limited in March 1983.
The Morris Major and Austin Lancer were produced by BMC Australia between 1958 and 1964. They were developed from the contemporary Wolseley 1500 and Riley One-Point-Five models? then on sale in the United Kingdom. The Major and Lancer, along with the Wolseley 1500 were produced at BMC Australia’s Victoria Park plant at Zetland in Sydney, and were unique to the country, containing up to 98% local content.
The Major and Lancer, as distinct from the sportier and more luxurious Wolseley/Riley cars, shared a similar level of appointment, finish and engine tune with contemporary Morris and Austin models. Although comparatively modest, the Major/Lancer was quite a modern car with a generally high level of comfort, quality and value. The sporting potential of the Major/Lancer was recognised immediately and specially prepared cars were raced into the early 1960s.
This plate has no embossed characters but has a pressed out embossed border?and is made from high quality aluminium and the artwork applied by a dye sublimation process with a lovely gloss finish. They measure 37 x 13 cm, exactly the same as the traditional fully embossed type of plate and look just like our other Aussie made novelty number plates; even the mounting holes are in exactly the same positions, so they can easily be hung on display indoors or outdoors. For protection during delivery we use extra packing materials to ensure they arrive in tip-top condition
