IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED BUY A FARMALL - The Farmall M depicted on this sign is one of the larger tractors in the Farmall letter series, capable of pulling a three or four bottom plow. Production began in 1939 and continued until 1952 when it was replaced with the Super M. The diesel MD was added to the lineup in 1941 and cost one and a half times as much as the gasoline M. Affectionately called the "Big brother to the Model H", it had the same frame and layout of the Model H so that mountable implements were interchangeable. The Farmall M was most popular with large-acreage row-crop farmers. It was powered by either a high-compression gas engine or a distillate version with lower compression. Options included the Lift-All hydraulic system, a belt pulley, PTO, rubber tires, starter, lights and a swinging drawbar. It could be ordered in the high-crop, wide-front or tricycle configurations. The high-crop version was called a Model MV. Farmall was a model name and later a brand name for tractors manufactured by the American company International Harvester (IH). The Farmall name was usually presented as McCormick-Deering Farmall and later McCormick Farmall in the evolving brand architecture of IH. Farmalls were general-purpose tractors. Their origins were as row-crop tractors, a category that they helped establish and in which they long held a large market share. During the decades of Farmall production (1920s to 1970s), most Farmalls were built for row-crop work, but many orchard, fairway, and other variants were also built. Most Farmalls were all-purpose tractors that were affordable for small to medium-sized family farms and could do enough of the tasks needed on the farm that the need for hired hands was reduced and the need for horses or mules was eliminated. Thus Farmall was a prominent brand in the 20th-century trend toward the mechanization of agriculture in the US. Enjoying a production run that spread out over 14 years, over 290,000 of these machines were produced. Around 1940, the cost of the Farmall M was around $1,100. The cost of the Farmall MD was around $1,700. The IH LOGO RED belongs to The International Harvester Company (abbreviated first IHC and later IH) now Navistar International Corporation. IHC was a United States agricultural machinery, construction equipment, vehicle, commercial truck, and household and commercial products manufacturer. In 1902, J. P. Morgan merged the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and Deering Harvester Company, along with three smaller agricultural equipment firms, to form International Harvester. International Harvester sold off its agricultural division in 1985 and renamed itself Navistar International Corporation in 1986. The Case IH brand began when the IH agricultural division merged into J.I. Case. In 1926 IH's Farmall Works began production in a new plant in Rock Island, Illinois, built solely to produce the new Farmall tractor. By 1930, the 100,000th Farmall was produced. IH next set their sights on introducing a true 'general-purpose' tractor designed to satisfy the needs of the average US family farmer. The resulting 'letter' series of Raymond Loewy-designed Farmall tractors in 1939 proved a huge success, and IH enjoyed a sales lead in tractors and related equipment that continued through much of the 1940s and 1950s, despite stiff competition from Ford, John Deere and other tractor manufacturers. International Harvester Australia, a subsidiary of the US Manufacturer, had a long relationship with the Australian Army with the US designed AS series trucks in the early 1950s. The AS164 2X4 used as a tractor unit and the 2X4 AS161 used as a trayback troop transport The association between International Harvester Australia and the Australian Army developed and in conjunction with the Army Design Establishment of the Australian Commonwealth Department of Supply, designed and constructed a range of trucks for the Australian Army. With body loosely based upon the design of cab 13 of the Canadian Military Pattern truck the first prototype built in 1959 was the International Truck Cargo 2½ Ton General Service, Australian No.1 Mk1. which was followed by the Mk2 prototype. A variant with a mid mounted 20,000 pound winch, resulted in the first production model, the Mk3 entering service in 1963 – just in time for Australia's entry into the Vietnam War. This very collectable plate comes standard as lightly embossed and made from high quality aluminium. Artwork is applied by a dye sublimation process with a lovely gloss finish. They measure 30 x 15 cm, exactly the same as other US made novelty number plates; even the mounting holes are in exactly the same positions, so they can easily be hung on display indoors or outdoors. The FARMALL TIME PROVED tin sign - Farmall was a model name and later a brand name for tractors manufactured by the American company International Harvester (IH). The Farmall name was usually presented as McCormick-Deering Farmall and later McCormick Farmall in the evolving brand architecture of IH. First produced in the USA on 21 June 1939, the Farmall A was released in Australia in March 1940 although some had been imported by the end of 1939. An IHC sales and promotional tour of regional Victoria and southern NSW took place in March-April 1940. The small 1621 kg Farmall A tractor was one of an all new series of International Harvester Co. tractors released in the USA in 1939. These new tractors were 'styled' by well-known industrial designer Raymond Loewy to boost sales by improving their visual appeal with slatted grills and curved panels. The Farmall A also featured an offset drivers' seat on the left to allow a clear view of the front wheel and any under-mounted cultivating implements. This feature was heavily promoted by IHC as 'Culti-vision' or 'Clear-vision'. It was specifically designed for cultivation on smaller farms but could be fitted with a variety of IHC implements including mowers and lifting arms.
