The ‘Trans-Am series’ is an automobile racing series that was created in 1966 by Sports Car Club of America at the dawn of the ‘pony car’ era. The series has in fact gone by a variety of different names through the years evolving over time from its original format as a Manufacturers’ Championship series for modified passenger sedans and CoupC)s to its current form as a Drivers’ / Manufacturers’ Championship Series that is open to GT style racecars. Champion drivers have been officially recognized, and Drivers’ Championship(s) have been awarded since the 1972 season.

TRANS AM also refers to Pontiac Firebird Trans Am – an American car 1967 – 2002. Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced 23 February 1967, the same model year as GM’s Chevrolet division platform-sharing Camaro. The name “Firebird” was also previously used by GM for the General Motors Firebird 1950s and early-1960s concept cars.
