The MCCORMICK 1956 FARMALL MODEL 400 circular sign featuresB the Farmall model 400 which was produced from 1954-1956 as a Row-Crop tractor. The number series began in 1954, when the Farmall 200 replaced the Super C with 22 HP. A year later, the 100 replaced the Super A with 18 HP, the 300 replaced the Super H with 35 HP, and the 400 replaced the Super M with 48 HP.

In 1956, the model number and horsepower increased from the top to the bottom of the line. The Model 450 upped the top of the line power to 51 HP. The 350 had 39 HP, the 230 had 27 HP, and the 130 had 21 HP.

Farmall which was a model name and later a brand name for tractors manufactured by the American company International Harvester (IH). The Farmall name was usually presented as McCormick-Deering Farmall and later McCormick Farmall in the evolving brand architecture of IH.

First produced in the USA on 21 June 1939, the Farmall A was released in Australia in March 1940 although some had been imported by the end of 1939. An IHC sales and promotional tour of regional Victoria and southern NSW took place in March-April 1940. The small 1621 kg Farmall A tractor was one of an all new series of International Harvester Co. tractors released in the USA in 1939. These new tractors were ‘styled’ by well-known industrial designer Raymond Loewy to boost sales by improving their visual appeal with slatted grills and curved panels. The Farmall A also featured an offset drivers’ seat on the left to allow a clear view of the front wheel and any under-mounted cultivating implements. This feature was heavily promoted by IHC as ‘Culti-vision’ or ‘Clear-vision’. It was specifically designed for cultivation on smaller farms but could be fitted with a variety of IHC implements including mowers and lifting arms.
