Description

The FORD Lou Bandt Ute novelty plate shows one of Australia’s first ever Utes. Lewis (Lou) Thornet Bandt ( 26 February 1910 b 1987) was an Australian car designer, most famous for designing and building the first ute (coupC) utility) cars in the 1930s. Bandt was born the eldest of five children in the South Australian town of Moonta. The family moved to Adelaide after World War I, and in 1924 he began a fitting and turning apprenticeship with Duncan & Fraser Ltd who specialised in modifying Model T Fords. He moved to Victoria in 1927 and Melbourne Motor Body & Assembling Company, and in 1929 he moved to the Ford factory as the subsidiary’s first designer.

The design of the ute was a result of a 1932 letter from an unnamed Victorian farmer’s wife asking for ba vehicle to go to church in on a Sunday and which can carry our pigs to market on Mondaysb. In response, Bandt developed the ute and the model called a “coupe utility” at the time was released in 1934. When the Australian version was displayed in the US, Henry Ford nicknamed it the “Kangaroo Chaser”. A convertible version, known as the roadster utility was produced in limited numbers by Ford in the 1930s.

During World War II, Bandt helped to design long-range fuel tanks for Spitfire and Thunderbolt fighter planes.[1] He also worked on design innovations for the UK-sourced Ford Zephyr, the 1967 Australian Ford Fairlane, and the never-approved Falcon convertible, of which six were built outside Ford in 1962.

This is a fully pressed embossed Aussie standard size 37cm x 13cm aluminium plate and extremely high quality, durable and long lasting and we are proud to say that it is Australian manufactured by the same company thatbs been producing and selling quality number plates for years. The sign can be hung inside or outside and each is pre-drilled so ready to hang.B For protection during delivery we use extra packing materials to ensure they arrive in tip-top condition

Important note about images we provide for novelty signs and plates: Just as we sometimes see that bpricing is subject to change without noticeb, so too are bdesigns subject to change without noticeb. In 99.99% of cases, what you see on Dixiebs website or brochure is what you get. However, there are the odd times when designs have changed in some small way (eg: maybe a logo moves to a different location on the item, or the colour changes). Sometimes this information doesnbt always trickle down until the new designs are manufactured and shipped to Dixie.B We hope this is helpful and understandable.
