Motorsport

ERNEST Hemingway said “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.”
Growing up in the UK, I became accustomed to motorsport at an early age and in those early years the UK was a major player in Formula One with champions such as Mike Hawthorn; Stirling Moss, (labelled as “the greatest driver never to have won the world championship”), Graham Hill, Jim Clark, John Surtees and Jackie Stewart
Now Australia’s fastest growing sport is Motorsport, in particular – V8 Supercars, and the stats tell us motorsport is the 4th most popular sport in the country. Aussies can indulge their passion for motor racing all year round. Head to Melbourne for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in March or visit the popular motorcycle circuit on Phillip Island. For adrenalin-surging V8 action, there’s the Gold Coast 600 in Surfers Paradise, the Sydney 500 and the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. Watch elite sports cars race around Tasmania in the Targa Tasmania or witness true driving endurance at the Bathurst 1000. Follow quad bikes, 4WDs and motorbikes from Perth to Kalgoorlie in the Australasian Safari. Or check out mean street machines at Canberra’s Summernats Car Festival.

  • DATSUN 240Z x THREE

The DATSUN 240Z x THREE novelty plate features the Datsun 240Z which according to Wikipedia was also called the Nissan S30 which was the first generation of Z GT two-seat coupe, produced by Nissan Motors of Japan from 1969 to 1978. Prior to the 240Z Nissan Motors had built the extremely popular Fairlady Roadsters, and exported 44,152 of them almost exclusively to the U.S.A. It arrived in Australia in March of 1970 but from 1969-1973 production of the 240Z never kept up with demand, and only 2,400 were imported into Aussie. The sports cars of the 1970s were all sexy wings and aero wedges with jaw-dropping designs that stand the test of time today and the stunning 240Z's flowing lines borrowed just enough from the great European sports cars of the 1960s to make this car a classic itself. The look was so successful that the company kept updating and tweaking the design through the '70s and into the early 1980s. The Sports car International magazine rated the 1970s top sports cars as follows: 1. Ferrari Daytona 2. Datsun 240Z 3. Lamborghini Countach 4. Lamborghini Miura SV 5. Ferrari 308 6. Ferrari Dino 7. Mazda RX-7 8. Porsche Carrera RS 9. De Tomaso Pantera 10. BMW M1 This plate comes standard as completely flat and non-embossed but for a little more cost we are able to give it a pressed out embossed border, so you have a choice. Please select your preference from the drop down menu. These novelty number  plates are made from high quality aluminium and the artwork applied by a dye sublimation process with a lovely gloss finish. They measure 37 x 13 cm, exactly the same as the traditional fully embossed type of plate and look just like our other Aussie made novelty number plates; even the mounting holes are in exactly the same positions, so they can easily be hung on display indoors or outdoors. One great advantage the flat non-embossed version is that owing to the absence of embossed border, and being just under 1 mm thick, it’s quite flexible and will flex about 10 cm from the centre, so can be mounted on curved surfaces. Each embossed rim style plate is sealed in a clear plastic sleeve, and each flat non-embossed plate is shrink-sealed in plastic film, so both types are ready for retail display, plus we offer the option of fixing them to a cardboard display card, so they can then be hung and displayed on the same display racks that are used for the other Aussie size plates we sell. To see what the display card looks like please click here For protection during delivery we use extra packing materials to ensure they arrive in tip-top condition If you would like plates made to your own design, we can easily do this for you. Virtually anything you want can be created with our modern digital equipment.  The key is good art, and we can do ANY GRAPHIC!    ANY DESIGN!    ANY COLOUR! For more details on creating a plate to your design please click here Important note about images we provide : Just as we sometimes see that “pricing is subject to change without notice”, so too are “designs subject to change without notice”. In 99.99% of cases, what you see on Dixie’s website or brochure is what you get. However, there are the odd times when designs have changed in some small way (eg: maybe a logo moves to a different location on the item, or the colour changes). Sometimes this information doesn’t always trickle down until the new designs are manufactured and shipped to Dixie. We hope this is helpful and understandable.

  • SPEED THRILLS DO THE TON

The SPEED THRILLS DO THE TON sign is one for the bike enthusiasts. It refers to the "café racer" developed among British motorcycle enthusiasts of the early 1960s, specifically the Rocker (or ton-up boy) subculture. The term describes a style of motorcycle for quick rides from one "transport café" or coffee bar to another.Cafe Racers were also common in Italy, France and other European countries. In 1973, US freelance writer Wallace Wyss, contributing to Popular Mechanics magazine, wrote that the term café racer was originally used derogatorily in Europe, aimed at riders pretending to road race but instead only parking outside cafés. • GTHO 351

The GTHO 351 novelty plate relates to the GTHO Phase III. Winner of the 1971 Bathurst 500, driven by Allan Moffat, the Phase III has been described as "...simply one of the best cars in the world, a true GT that could take on Ferraris and Astons on their own terms..." The GTHO 351 Cleveland engine output was understated as 300 bhp (224 kW) to satisfy insurers. It is generally accepted to produce in the region of 350-380 bhp (265 kW -283 kW). Initial cars were equipped with an electrical rev limiter which came into effect at 6,150 rpm. With the rev limiter disabled, the engine was reputed to pull in excess of 7,000 rpm, even in 4th gear. The Phase III GTHO was Australia's fastest four-door production car. Some interesting bits and pieces from Wikipedia - Top Speed: 227 km/h (141 mph) @ 6150rpm 0 - 60 mph - 6.5 seconds 0 – 100 km - 6.8 seconds Standing 1/4 mile (400m) - 14.4 secondsThe Phase III GTHO is in incredibly high demand with collectors and investors. Due to this demand, a small production run, and 'fewer than 100 remaining' there been a flow on effect into values of the lesser XW and other XY Falcons, particularly genuine GS and 'standard' GT models. Other models that have also benefited from the appreciation of the GTHO include the XA and XB GT hardtops, the earlier XW GTHO Phase 1 and 2 and the XC Cobra.A Falcon XY GTHO Phase III was sold at by Bonhams & Goodmans at auction for A$683,650 in March 2007. The car had only 40,000 km on the clock. The buyer of the car said it will be garaged, and that it won't be driven, but that he will be "keeping it as an investment". The sale price set a new auction record for Australian muscle cars. Whilst in June 2007 another Phase III sold for A$750,000. Shannons national auctions manager Christophe Boribon blames the global financial crisis for the collapse in values. "We reached an artificial high a couple of years ago but then the GFC hit. Now it is back to reality, " he said. "There is only a limited number of buyers out there for a car like that. "The car is a very rare car. The car is the holy grail of Australian muscle cars."
